Things to do

Cruising the swan river to wine country
Drift upstream from the city through glimmering waterways to sun drenched vineyards on a Captain Cook Cruises journey along the winding Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan) to the Swan Valley, Western Australia’s oldest wine region. Step ashore for an exclusive experience at the renowned Sandalford Estate, where you’ll sample award winning wines and enjoy a superb two course lunch overlooking vibrant vineyard views. Live entertainment and indulgent desserts round out the experience on the leisurely cruise back to the city.
Soaring over Perth at sundown
Thrilling at any time of day, the Matagarup Zip+Climb becomes truly unforgettable at twilight. As the sculptural arches of Matagarup Bridge curve and intersect like swans in flight above the river, you’re invited to rise with them. Climb 314 steps to the SkyView Deck and take in sweeping views — the city skyline on one side, Perth’s iconic stadium on the other, with the river below shimmering in the fading light. Then comes the ultimate rush: launch into space and feel the exhilaration as you zip 400 metres across the water to the riverbank.
Walking Through Time in Fremantle
In the historic port city of Fremantle (Walyalup), charming streets hum with the stories of centuries past. This is a place shaped by convict beginnings, thriving fishing communities, and deep cultural significance for the Whadjuk people. Join Fremantle Tours for a guided walk through Freo, as it’s affectionately known, tracing a path from the State’s oldest building and former prison to its newest bars and dining spots. The experience concludes as twilight settles over heritage lined High Street, casting it in rich, atmospheric tones.
Golden hour by the Indian Ocean
Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are unforgettable — vast skies ignited in fiery reds and oranges, softened with dusky pinks and casting shimmering trails across the water. Settle into a lounge at Bathers Beach House, Australia’s first licensed beach, where you can feel the sand beneath your feet while sipping cocktails and sharing a seafood platter. Just along the coast at Gage Roads Freo, the evening spectacle continues, pairing golden skies with local brews and the slow passage of ships through Victoria Quay.
Stories of the oldest city sanctuary
Kaya, wanjoo (hello and welcome). Join Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours for a meaningful walk-through Mount Eliza (Karrgatup) and Kings Park (Kaarta Koomba), guided by Traditional Owners. Journey into the heart of this city sanctuary as they share stories of its ancient history and reveal the cultural uses of its rich plant life, home to around 3,000 native species. Listen to Dreamtime stories, traditional song and language, all while taking in sweeping views across the city below.

Running with thieves

A craft brewer and distillery

Running With Thieves is a bold independent brewery, distillery, and lifestyle brand in South Fremantle, Australia. They craft premium beers, artisan spirits, and RTD cocktails on-site, operating a massive coastal-industrial venue that blends a bar, eatery, and counter-culture apparel retail shop.

I’m going to start with a brewery down in Fremantle in Perth called, called Running With Thieves. It’s an odd name, I get it, I get that. But we went there in Perth last year during The British & Irish Lions Tour and we had the best day.

There are small groups, big groups, all sorts. We were quite a big group and we had a wicked time. I think the beer was lovely and the food was lovely, but the whole setup was brilliant. There’s Loads of space and it’s really chilled. I will definitely be going back.”

Big Don's smoked meats

Australian-style Texas barbecue restaurant

Big Don’s Smoked Meats is the ultimate barbecue restaurant. Hidden in a Bayswater warehouse, this underground find packs one of the world’s largest pit rooms. A meat-lovers paradise fuelled by 2,000 kilograms of slow-smoked Wagyu brisket, beef ribs and custom Texas sausages. Part backyard festival, part high-energy smokehouse, Big Don’s delivers a loud, rebellious and unmatched Texas BBQ experience in Western Australia.

Number two of the top five joints I would recommend you visit is again in Perth and it’s Big Don’s Barbecue or Big Don’s Smoked Meats I think they call it.

It sounds like the sort of place where just big barbecue lovers like me go and it is where we go and you must go but even if you’re not, there’s vegetables, there’s cocktails, there’s puddings, they do all sorts of stuff in there. The food is unbelievable.”

Flat’s top tip: “Don’t eat breakfast and don’t plan dinner because you won’t need either. Focus it all on Big Don’s.”
